It’s the end of an era. The final book in one of my favourite MM romantic mystery series has finally arrived and it’s a bitter sweet affair. It’s sad to say goodbye to these beloved characters for the last time, but author AJ Sherwood weaves together another interesting mystery while celebrating the adventures of Jon, Donova, their friends and family, plus tying up loose ends and wrapping everything up in a satisfying bow.

Synopsis

For those not in the know, this series follows the adventures of Jonathan Bane, a powerful psychic and private investigator living in Nashville. His partner (both romantically and at work) Donovan Havilli acts as his assistant and bodyguard on their cases, which usually involve some weird goings on including serial killers, missing bodies, ghosts and other strange occurrences.

In this final outing, Jon and Donovan are preparing for their upcoming wedding. While neither is looking for a big fuss, there is still a lot of stuff to organise. Lucky for them, their ever-expanding circle of friends and family are keen to help.

Jon also has a new apprentice to train in all things psychic; a cold case to crack in order to free an innocent man from prison; an incompetent police detective that needs to be dealt with and some loose ends with a former family member that are overdue being resolved. Needless to say, they have a lot of their plate. Can Jon and Donovan sort everything out, solve the case and make it down the aisle in one piece?

Review

AJ Sherwood decided to throw everything and the kitchen sink into this final entry to one of her most popular series. A mystery to solve, a wedding to organise, a host of returning characters and more than a few callbacks to previous cases, this book should feel bloated and confusing. But surprisingly, it all flows quite smoothly. Although, I will admit I did recently re-read the series from the beginning in preparation for this final book, so events and characters were still fresh in my memory. If you haven’t revisited the series recently, you might get a little confused with so many characters coming and going.

That being said, this was an excellent mystery that was well paced and kept my interest throughout. I was sad to hear this will indeed be the final outing for these characters, but AJ Sherwood has announced that the several spin off series that Jon’s Mysteries has spawned are likely to continue – which means Jon and Donovan may still return in the future as guest characters.

I look forward to revisiting these stories time and time again. The audiobooks especially are excellent and highly recommended. Grab yourself Book 1 if you haven’t already and join in on Jon and Donovan’s fun and wacky psychic adventures from the beginning.
