What I’ve Been Reading
Here we are again with some more reading suggestions. I’ve been busy the last week or two getting ready for the imminent release of my novel Chasing The Cupcake Boy so I haven’t had a lot of time for recreational reading. But here are some favourites from the vault that I enjoyed and that I hope you’ll enjoy too!
“Speed Dating The Boss” by Sue Brown
The first book in the Cowboys & Angels series, set amongst the staff and patrons of “Cowboys & Angels” – a rough and tumble, working class bar in New York City.
Dan loves his job, working as a bartender at Cowboys & Angels, but there are some things he could live without. The endless bar fights, his boss’s troublemaking daughter, and, most of all, his maddening, unrequited love for his ultra straight boss.
Dan likes his simple life, his simple little apartment. He even likes his cat who hates him. But his long work hours, college studies and being hopelessly head over heels for his boss leaves very little time for dating and romance.
So when his best friend announces that he’s getting married, everyone insists Dan needs a date for the wedding. Dan doesn’t mind going stag, but before he can object, the boss’s daughter is busy organising the first ever Cowboys & Angels Gay Speed Dating event!
But why is his boss so keen on Dan participating? Could it be that he’s not as ultra straight as Dan thinks?
This fun, witty and thoroughly enjoyable book features great characters, cracking dialogue and a sassy cat with attitude – what more could you want?
“The Adrien English Mysteries” by Josh Lanyon
If you like juicy murder mysteries, amateur sleuths and a touch of romance, this series is for you! Adrien English is a mystery author and owner of Cloak and Dagger Books, LA’s only dedicated mystery bookshop. However, the mysteries aren’t confined to the books in his shop!
In the first book: When his friend and co worker is brutally murdered in an alley, the police quickly suspect Adrien is responsible. Desperate to clear his name, Adrien begins investigating, but quickly discovers there is more to the killing than a simple mugging gone wrong.
With the help of Detective Jake Riordan, a closeted cop who finds Adrien equal parts annoying, intriguing and attractive, the two men attempt to unravel the mystery before they themselves become targets of a killer who is now turning their attention to Adrien…
This series is one of the best murder mystery collections I have ever read. Josh Lanyon creates detailed, immersive worlds for his characters filled with movie and literary references, humour and great plot twists. Each book is impossible to put down and you’ll find yourself wanting to go back and reread this series time and time again. Highly recommended!
“The Mystery Of Nevermore” by C.S. Poe
More murder mysteries with the exceptional “Snow & Winter” series from C.S. Poe. These books take their inspiration from historical events and literary classics, and applies them to thoroughly enjoyable modern day stories. I can’t wait for the next book in this series!
In the first book: Sebastian Snow, owner of Snow’s Antique Emporium, just wants his business to succeed. But when his shop suffers a break in and a human heart is found under the floorboards, Sebastian suspects this might not be good for business.
His attempts to unravel the mystery puts a strain on his relationship with his boyfriend Neil, a closeted crime scene technician, and Sebastian’s growing feelings for the case’s lead detective, the hunky Calvin Winter, probably isn’t helping either.
When it becomes clear they are dealing with a killer whose murders echo the macabre stories of Edgar Allen Poe, will Snow and Winter be able to crack the case before the killer comes after them?
These books are brilliantly conceived and researched, with historical and literary details that really make these stories something unique. The characters are wonderful and the stories are guaranteed to keep you guessing.
Well, that’s all for this week!
I hope you find some fun books to keep you busy.
