August Reading Recommendations

Hi Everyone!

Here we are again with another crop of recommendations from my recently read pile! The last month has been super busy for me, as I’ve been back at my day job while also working on writing my new book. As a result, I’ve only got two recommendations this month, but both are amazing and slightly outside the usual for me.

“The Lightning-Struck Heart” by TJ Klune

Going in, I’d like to declare that the Fantasy genre has never really been my thing. I’ve never read (or even watched) Game of Thrones, and the whole magical / medieval / dragons / wizards thing has never been something that has held much interest for me – until now! This is Book 1 of the Tales From Verania series, and it’s easily one of the funniest, campest, most downright entertaining books I’ve read in years…

From The Blurb:

Once upon a time, in an alleyway in the slums of the City Of Lockes, a young and somewhat lonely boy named Sam Haversford turns a group of teenage douchebags into stone completely by accident.

Of course, this catches the attention of a higher power, and Sam’s pulled from the only world he knows to become an apprentice to the King’s Wizard, Morgan of Shadows.

When Sam’s fourteen, he enters the Dark Woods and returns with Gary, the hornless gay unicorn, and a half-giant named Tiggy, earning the moniker Sam of Wilds.

At fifteen, Sam learns what love truly is when a new knight arrives at the castle―Knight Ryan Foxheart, the dreamiest dream to have ever been dreamed.

Naturally, it all goes to hell when Ryan dates the reprehensible Prince Justin, Sam can’t control his magic, a sexually aggressive dragon kidnaps the prince, and the King sends them on an epic quest to save Ryan’s boyfriend, all while Sam falls more in love with someone he can never have. Or so he thinks…

My Thoughts:

TJ Klune’s trademark snarky banter, scathingly funny wit, adorable characters and surreal story ideas are all on display here. This book had me howling with laughter at times, while at others it came close to breaking my heart. It’s sweet, funny, downright demented and an absolute pleasure to experience. I’m slowly making my way through the rest of the series, savouring the journey. Highly recommended!

“Out of the Darkness” by Nix Knox

WARNING: this title contains multiple triggers including mental health issues / depression, self harm, discussion of suicide, drug use, rough BDSM sexual play.

I first encountered this book a few years ago, and it remains one of the darkest things I’ve ever read. It has a happy ending, but boy howdy – does it make you work to get there! This one will not be for everyone…

From The Blurb:

Unable to clear his name, disgraced cop Dane Michaels makes the final decision: end his life and get revenge on everyone who wronged him. But when his plan goes awry, he finds himself at the mercy of a pot-growing hippie. A man with secrets of his own, the criminal gives Dane the last thing he thought he’d find: a reason to live, and a way out of the darkness.

With a huge heart and a smile to match, nurse Justin Weathers is determined to heal the broken man who literally collapses at his feet. Discovering Dane is a suicidal cop puts him in a precarious position. Saving the sexy officer might mean imprisonment for growing the pot that helps his terminal patients. But when Dane awakens long-buried desires, Justin decides to put his life—and his heart—on the line.

As the boundaries between right and wrong blur, both men find themselves questioning long-held beliefs. Sexual role-playing fantasies in the remote desert cabin test the balance of power between them. But when a killer gunning for Dane tracks them down, each must make a crucial choice: save himself, or sacrifice everything for love.

My Thoughts:

Nix Knox weaves together two extraordinary characters; one who has accepted that his life is over, and another who, by saving the life of the other, has been forced to accept that his life is over too. The result is two men who find themselves open to possibilities they would never have ordinarily considered. Despite the dark themes and frankly graphic BDSM scenes, this book ultimately takes its darkness and repurposes it into hope for something better.
